Do bear with me, just abit of quick info. Razz

For older or some bikes, they have their engine oil top up hole ON the engine case. These are wet sump bikes and checking oil requires them to be cold. As their dip sticks are ON the engine case, where all the oil collects after a good nite's drip-down.

For dry sump XR4, DRZ, WR4 etc., we check oil level AFTER the bike's hot and warmed up. Reason being the dipstick is located at the highest part of the whole system. So the engine needs to pump the overnite oil up to the dipstick, before we can get a proper 'dip'.

P.S. At times even warming up wun give a true oil level, it might raise abit after a short trip.

There're guys out there w better knowledge of XR4s, and dis are only wat I knew..

If every morning you're facing the starting problem, it's not normal liao. Could be jus some adjustment, or really the rings. So best to get it checked.
By the way, it's not wise to leave alone a out of adjustment tappet. My guess is dat it'll lead to escalated wear. Not to mention the irritating noise from the cyclinder head.

As for checking the oil, it's better to let it idle for up to 3mins. And I'm pretty sure we shd trust the level shown AFTER riding.
