You seem to have a smokey issue...

1. check your jettings. Pilot 58, main 158, with diffuser. It MAY just be overly rich jettings if it's black smoke.

2. Monitor oil level every week for 2 weeks (assuming you ride the bike everyday)

The ONLY CORRECT way to check oil is to ride the bike for 20min, let it idle for 5 min, sit on the bike, kill the engine, then immediately check the oil level. You will get inconsistent readings if you do it any other way.

If your bike is consuming oil, you will need a top overhaul.

Send it to one of the following dirt bike mechs if you have no idea what to do:
Sing Hong
Fastrak
Magic Motowerks
Speedzone
Ideal Motors
Holeshot Racing

I have NO IDEA how much they will charge.

Let me share 1 easier method ,

Step 1 - Use your middle finger on your left hand

Step 2 - Find the hole in your exhaust (I presume there is only 1 )

Step 3 - Poke it and do some digging .

Step 4 - take out , Look , smell and lick it .

If it is very oily , then follow number 2 on New-dirt post (overhaul)

If not oily but got a lot of black black power thingy ,follow number 1 on new dirt post . it may be just need to decarbonise pipe or jetting issues .

I would address the problem promptly if I were you.

Sure you can ride around with a mosquito fogging machine, but this means you will need to monitor oil level VERY closely, and constantly top up oil. Run it dry, and you will have a very expensive engine rebuild on your hands.

In addition, you will start to lose compression, and in turn less power.

Your bike, your choice.

fix now you will pay less ,if later stage more parts worn out can prepare for full overhaul already ,

and if you run out out luck kenna LTA /NEA enforcement officer ,will waste more $$$ ...and still will have to fix bike in the end .

Please don't waste your money , you lose out in the long run , change parts that are worn out , not change parts that you think is spoilt .

or you will be dumping money into a endless pit and still end up with a scrap eventually .

* Honda XR/XLR has always been mentioned as bulletproof bikes , and most when thru overhaul every new owner .

* the engine will be able to last more than 10 years , but why so many owners got hit by overhauls every year ?

There is something wrong somewhere !!!
Can the xr owners share your maintenance schedule ?
1) Engine oil grade ?
2) Change interval in Km/month ?

change parts that are worn out , not change parts that you think is spoilt

Mechanics charge according to number of worn out parts and labour , not by "top overhaul"quotation .

Just go to a reputable mech , ask them for a quote

And every "overhaul" price is diff ,i never do bargains with mechanics ,

eg ,if your friend tell you he fix at M shop for $600 , S shop see your bike already quote $1000 ,then you go M shop say can do mine also for $600 .

In layman's term ,both also did "overhauls " .
But in order to fix your bike in your desired amount and if you have more worn out parts ,
The mech will only change the major worn out parts and mix with your old parts that are deemed not so worn out .

You be lucky the bike will last a few months before another overhaul .

Routine Maintenance ,i use only Motul 300V ,or branded fully synthetic E.O , change interval will be every 3 to 4000 km.

Many always ask can use lower grade oil and change at 500 or 1000Km ,
If can use there wouldn't be so many "overhaul" threads popping out every month
.
