Just like to know if anyone else having this problem. Had changed out at least 3 ~ 4 tensioner in the pass year or so.
Batch issue? Using Part# 14520-KCY-671 (verfied on US fiche)
Anyone come across MCCT for xr4?
Someone tried replacing the screw on the tensioner with a bolt on ADVrider but just wondering if it can last as the threaded part is alu and pretty thin. . .

Yup, seems mine having same symptoms as yours. . . either the coil spring inside become weak after some time or the internal threaded 'screw' thingy worn, causing extra friction.
Got a reply from that thread. Might work. . .

| What I've done in the past to ensure the tensioner holds up, is simply disassemble everything, install a nut INSIDE the tensioner and JB weld it in place, then thread my bolt in with another nut on the outside as a locking nut. works likea charm. google CBR600 manual CCT, theres a thread on a CBR forum someplace that I was a member of that shows how. |
Cheers!

Sounds good, BUT, how are you going to determine the right tension?
For MCCT, the correct way is to remove the cam cover and manually/visually check the chain slack while a 2nd person is adjusting the MCCT and turing the engine round. This has to be repeated every 15 to 20 hours, whicn I'm sure nobody bothers to do around here.
Too little slack, and you risk increased wear and chain failure. Too much slack and you risk a major engine blowup.

@ new_dirt
Well, seems like thats the only way out if the auto tensioner keep giving problem. . . most DRZs are doing that i guess.
@ simplijayb
I kept an old tensioner as backup for mod if this new one kaput again. . . I'll just wait and see till then. How is your current one doing?

the 'coil' spring is actually a spiral type spring. it tends to break easier esp with recent manufactures.
however, i would check on my timing system, esp chain for irregular wear, high/low pitch. this will exert additional backforce to the tensioner to break the spiral or wear the thread. most times replace chain n tensioner as a set.
digging in further, what causes irregular wear on the chain is your riding style!! eg. high gear on a low speed with WOT, or simply just over rev... worst if u are having ur diffuser on (restricted mufflers) yet practises hard acceleration/engine braking etc..
how rugged the mighty XR can be, no any engine would have survived long in these conditions.

Initially I also thought the riding style could be the issue. . . but the tensioner lasted a long time during those times that i was using the bike for track more frequently. Motard setup, shorter gear ratio & higher revs etc. . . so I got no clue. . . and I heard its happening to many XR4s recently.
Hahaha . . . and I hardly WOT WOT at all nowadays. . .
