Thanks for the lessons from the school of hard knocks.
I"m sure the pleasure you got from rebuilding more then made up for the initial disappointment. heh!
I"m also looking at buying one and your guide came at the perfect time. But it's easy to diagnose in theory, but hard when you're looking at a bike you never bought before...and even harder when you're impatient to buy a new ride.
Cheers man

well...thats part of buying a 2nd hand bike...i was lucky enuf to get a good bike in 97 and most of the damage is on my own fault...What i can add is like what he said earlier is true.Get a friend who is familiar to the bike to come and check..
but even then there is no way you can check on everything, like the "shaft"which is well knwn to happen to alot of xrs..or even the carb jetting...i bet some of it even the owner dosnt knw bout it as he might not be the 1st owner.and heaven knws how much he spent repairing the damage the 1st owner left for him.
so there is no way to be 100% sure unless u got a brand new bike.
.theres also the side stand...so far iv not seen any xr which has not been welded for side stand breakage...but true enuf it is a bullet proof bike...trust me...been riding it since 97 and even tho at times it dies on me (like 4times i can remember for the past 13years)i will ALWAYS without fail be home with the bike instead of having to tow it back to a shop....and again let me repeat...its a 13 year old bike..been with me from before i was in NS...

Thank you.
There were more nitty gritty details but i guess its not much worth mentioning as i am only going for the major issues.
Well the only way to see if the bike is a good deal is to really ride it like it was built to be ridden, ride it dirty! Then you will know what is good/bad and what needs to be changed.
Well lesson learnt, here is a good advice from many of my friends. Get the bike as cheap as possible and rebuilt it with the remaining of your budget. If the budget is just enough to buy the bike i guess we have to depend on lady luck then.
I am new to offroad bikes/riding, i m sure the rest of the guys here have much more to share cos i am sure i missed out alot of things. Yeah and pictures please cos some of us learn/understand better through visuals.
