Hi guys, juz wondering how to make my bike achieve higher crusing speed other than changing the sproket??? I'm currently using a 15f/42r combination, able to cruise at 90km/h but at a high rpm of 6k, got a buddy whose using 15f/45r getting better crusing speed. Cause i always need to travel by the expressway. thanks for input.

http://john.rushworth.com/Pics/XR400/XR4FAQ/gearcalc.htm
use the link from John.Rushworth.com and u'll get the sprocket ratio u require to attain ur dream cruising speed...
other upgrades that u can get are :-
full exhaust system, aftermarket carbs (fcr, edelbrock pumper, sudco mikuni, XR's Only pumper carb, etc), hotcams, big bore engine, etc...
with money, anything is possible...good luck...d=)

oh ya...forgot to say...there's no way a 15f/45r can have a better cruising then a 15f/42r...the bigger the rear, the better the torque/pickup but compromise on the distance speed..so if u're getting 6k rpm on a 15f/42r, u'll likely to get 8k rpm running the engine on 15f/45r...d=)
hope it helps...d=)

sorry to ask a noob question. Does changing to FCR have any effect on the cruising speed?

hmm...i'm a noob too...still learning...from wat i know(i might be wrong), FCR will increase the power of the bike...means to go faster when moving off...but cruising speed of the bike will remain the same at a certain RPM...lets say 6k RPM...with stock carb or aftermarket carb, an XR can only hit a certain 'comfortable' cruising speed no matter how u whack it...
so if u want power, upgrade all the parts ur money can buy...but if its ONLY for cruising speed and fuel consumption, use stock parts n jet the carb properly...it'll provide sufficient power for your highway riding with cost-saving...
my 0.0002cents...hope it helps...

hmmm, thanks for all the inputs. Not that i dont wanna change to a smaller sproket, juz that was wondering my crusing speed on the highway seems a little stressful on the engine even on 90km/h, so thought of asking u guys is there any other alternative. BTW, i'm using a white brother header with gpr end can.. hmmm. seems like changing the sproket is the only alternative left for me. Also, i'll remove both of my mirror to increase 10HP! :D:D:D

You got it reversed.
14-45 is the same as 15-48
13-45 is the same as 15-51
1 tooth down in front is roughly equivalent to 3 up behind, and vice versa.
