For trail. I suggest you lower down your tyre pressure for better gripping and traction at dirt. Gear ratio is not really the main thing which need to be considered. It's more to the tyre pressure.

gear ratio is just as impt. yes, it does help to lower your pressure going into a trail. but generally a higher gear ratio will help you get a little more low end torque in a tight trail. and even a few teeth makes a difference.
i changed rear sprocket at ah boy (bad decision on my part) and cuz he said there was no stock, i had to take whatever he had. basically cheated me and put a honda twister sprocket, which was ridiculously small (i think it's 38 or 40? can't rmbr). i really felt it during the next trail. bike totally bogged down thru puddles and had probs getting up slopes. managed to change it to a 43T over at ah hua and have never been happier.
