KTM is the initials of the two company founders (Ernst Kronreif and Hans Trunkenpolz), and the location of the original factory (Mattighofen, Austria) - Hence - "Kronreif, Trunkenpolz, Mattighofen".

The first production KTM motorcycles were produced in 1953 (hence the '53' logo you see on some of the Hard Parts apparel). In 1968, the Penton "Six Days" model was produced for export to the USA, and in 1970 KTM began producing their own engines (they had been using Sachs engines in the past). 1978 saw the establishment of "KTM America, Inc." in Ohio, and 1982 began the development of a water-cooled 4-stroke engine (which later became known as the LC4, for "Liquid Cooled 4-stroke).

In 1991, the KTM parent company filed for bankruptcy, and was divided into independent successors for their various products (motorcycles, bicycles, radiators and tooling). In 1992, KTM GMBh (the new motorcycle division) opened its doors under new management, with new motorcycle designs and a "Hard Enduro" concept. In 1995, KTM acquired both Husaberg and White Power (WP) suspension as subsidiaries.

1999 saw the opening of a new factory, and production of the RFS (Racing Four Stroke) 400 and 520 models, which (with minor refinements) pretty much brings us up to the present, and also answers the question "What does RFS stand for?"

KTM SM riders, considering the small fuel tank capacity, do you guys still top up locally or do you guys do all the topping up over the causeway?
i figured that considering the tank is 8.5ltrs, at about 18-20km per litre, the most you will get out from a full tank would be someting like 150-160km per full tank. having to top up every 160km, and going across the causeway doesn't seem to be practical.
so correct me, a KTM 400/525... you get ard 18-20km per ltr? fuel tank capacity 8.5 ltrs? stock tank, not those aftermarket big tanks...
thanks

Has it ever concerned you guys that since the Fuel Cap has no lock, anyone can steal your fuel or add some foreign objects in it?
I don't live in a private appartment and i believe alot of us don't too.
I hate to go down one morning get ready to go to work, to find something shocking.

many bikes are like that, but think of it again, it pays to know the bikers in your car park, make friends with them, help each other look out. Such things shouldn't hinder you from pursuing the things you like.

where did you find this deal? I think its a fairly good price if the condition is good. its like the price of a DRZ, but the performance is from a KTM. is it a 2nd hand bike? or a brand new? 06 model i guess should be 2nd hand? pardon me as i'm still a noob in motards.
